University of Missouri-Kansas City’s (UMKC) Center for Neighborhoods, a collaborator with the NNIP partner Center for Economic Information, has launched a new initiative called Social Connecting/Physical Distancing. Center for Neighborhoods staff are holding on-line workshops for volunteer neighborhood leaders with university expertise on disaster recovery efforts and the use of tech to overcome social isolation. It also includes a survey to identify core issues for neighborhood leadership and governance during this crisis.
Urban Institute staff are convening NNIP current and potential partners to exchange ideas and activities on how local data can help local communities' response to COVID-19. The network has collected examples on an informal spreadsheet
CI:NOW reframed the gloomy conversation around the COVID-19 outbreak to a message of thanks to the community members who are sheltering at home to protect their families and neighbors. Their analysis, presented in an infographic, shows 1,271 lives were saved in San Antonio in the first week of the Stay-At-Home order by individuals limiting contact with others. CI:NOW shared their methods and infographic with the NNIP Partner network and inspired four other communities to create similar infographics to remind their community members of how much good they do by sheltering at home.
In collaboration with United Way of Greater Austin, Children's Optimal Health (COH) created a set of maps showing 211 requests for assistance across Austin’s multi-county MSA region. The 211 service, run by United Way in many communities, is a place residents can call for help when they are experiencing hardship, which has particularly become relevant in the COVID-19 outbreak crisis. In Texas, the governor publicly identified 211 as the place residents should call for assistance.
The COVID-19 pandemic has lead to the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives, causing financial hardships for many people and battering economies for local communities. All of this is disproportionately affecting people of color and those with low incomes. This crisis has also revealed and magnified gaps in data and information that need to be addressed for communities to take informed action in pandemic response and recovery.

Children's Optimal Health received a competitive grant from Good Measure to look at digital access, including device, internet access and necessary skills needed for education, health care, and jobs especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study will focus on people and families with lower incomes across the 5 county Austin MSA using mixed methods including surveys, focus groups and key informant interviews, as well as mapping pertinent data from the American Community Survey and other sources. What happens when quality data are put in the hands of changemakers? As Amy Carroll-Scott shared, “Data doesn’t change lives, advocates armed with data do.” Drexel University’s Urban Health Collaborative (UHC) used their expertise as a data intermediary to support the data needs of frontline practitioners, community-based organizations, and city agencies and elected officials during the COVID-19 crisis.
