The State of Open Government

On Thursday, March 15, the Sunlight Foundation hosted The State of Open Government, a series of panels and talks about open government at the federal level as well as open data projects in the District of Columbia.

Joining them to discuss federal challenges were some of the nation’s foremost experts on ethics and open government, including:

• Danielle Brian, Executive Director at the Project On Government Oversight
• Walter Shaub, head of the Ethics Practice at the Campaign Legal Center and former Director of the Office of Government Ethics
• Cori Zarek, Mozilla Fellow, President of the DC Open Government Coalition, and former Deputy U.S. Chief Technology Officer

In addition, they discussed open government data in Washington DC, and how community groups are using that data with:

• Julie Kanzler, Program Manager of Data APIs & Systems for the Office of the Chief Technology Officer, District of Columbia Government
• Kate Rabinowitz, Co-Captain of Code for DC and freelance data journalist with DataLensDC
• Peter Tatian, Senior Fellow at the Urban Institute’s Metropolitan Housing and Communities Policy Center and project director of NeighborhoodInfo DC (Peter's talk begins at minute 24). 

They talked about federal transparency and engaging communities around open data.
