Tenant Demographics and Eviction Filings in Durham, NC

The disparate impact of eviction processes on Black residents has been reported in US communities whenever it is examined closely. This report documents an exploratory analysis of 5 years of civil process records for eviction filings in Durham County. We document here a clear disproportionate impact, particularly for Black women, in the summary ejectment process in Durham. While Black tenants are 43.5% of Durham’s renting population, they are 75.8% of the tenants facing eviction.
