Community Change: Engaging Through Data
In this presentation to Milwaukee's First Ever Data Day, D3's Executive Director Erica Raleigh stressed the importance of data to decision-making in an wide range of situations. Reviewing the multitude of sources of data at the federal, state, and local levels, she made the case for synthesizing the disconnected sources in a way that is meaningful for anyone -- one aspect of D3's mission.
A second aspect of the mission is creating new data, illustrated by D3's work on the comprehensive Detroit parcel survey conducted in 2014, the Motor City Mapping (MCM) project. This survey of all parcels of land in the city enabled the development of indexes to identify neighborhoods with the greatest potential for blight intervention, a capability already utilized by the City of Detroit and other groups working to revitalize Detroit.
