Household Experiences: COVID-19's Continued Impact on Parents and Children

Data Driven Detroit has been examining the impact of COVID-19 on education and employment in a blog series. Most recently, they have been analyzing how schools and childcare facilities are responding to pandemic-related regulations and precautions. Looking at how the Census Household Pulse Survey numbers have changed in the past few months, they have started measuring the impact these changes to schools and childcare facilities have been having on school-aged children and their parents in Metro Detroit.

Topline findings include that the majority of Metro Detroit children are involved in some type of distance-learning, kids most affected have caretakers over 55 and/or are Hispanic or Latino, and that increased childcare responsibilities are most likely to affect the employment of women with kids. Additionally, there is significant concern that Metro Detroit childcare programs will be unsustainable without some financial support.
