Digital Access Indicators

In 2017, the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation released the Digital Access and Equity in Baltimore report that highlighted the importance of access to digital resources but the lack of information on how inequitably communities might be impacted. On December 6, 2018, the Census Bureau released the 2013-2017 American Community Survey which provides the results technology questions at the small-area, census tract level for the first time. Over the next few months, BNIA-JFI will be exploring these data to better understand neighborhood-level disparities in digital access, which will potentially impact enumeration during the 2020 Census Complete Count.

This map explores access to digital computing devices, such as smartphones and computers. In Baltimore City, approximately 18% of households do not have a computer, cell phone, or tablet. A small proportion of households (6%) have only a smart phone for accessing the internet. These percentages vary by census tract. Use this map to explore the household variations within the City.
