Environmental and Sustainability Data Workshop
Introduces beginners to different types of data and their limitations in local use, it also links to research and citations for measuring sustainability
This workshop was part of the Detroit Sustainability Indicators Project. The first workshop, conducted in 2013, introduced participants from 44 community and environmental advocacy organizations to the different types of data, common limitations, and the Data Driven Detroit (D3) library of online resources. D3 engaged participants in focused group discussions around data analysis in three areas related to sustainability and the environment: water quality, property maintenance, and air pollution from transportation. Participants were introduced to such topics as
- general data literacy,
- collecting and visualizing data, and
- data assessment.
A final goal of the training is to create a sustainability index for Detroit.
his training was conducted in three sessions of three hours each. It was the first of three workshops conducted in the summers of 2013, 2014, and 2015. The second workshop introduced attendees to mobile data collection, and the third taught participants to download free datasets and create web visualizations.
