"Uphill Both Ways": Public Transit in the Detroit Metro Area

The Detroit metropolitan region has two bus systems, one that serves Detroit, and one (the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation or SMART) that serves the surrounding communities. However, not all communities in the area participate in SMART, having “opted out” of the system. The blog “Uphill Both Ways” uses data from the Census Bureau’s Longitudinal Employment and Household Dynamics data set to estimate the number of Detroit residents working in lower-income jobs in the opt-out communities.
