Federal place-based initiatives require good data to help grantees set priorities, select interventions, and monitor performance. Several local member organizations of the National Neighborhood Indicators Partnership (NNIP) work with grantees to think about how to collect and use data to better manage their initiatives. NNIP is a peer learning network coordinated by the Urban Institute, and its collective experience illustrates how these programs benefit from tapping into and investing in long-term local data capacity. Companion case studies to this brief provide more detail how NNIP partners support place-based initiatives.
