United Way and CI:NOW in Partnership with the U. S. Census Bureau, Denver Region Held a Workshop in "Using Census Data for Community and Neighborhood Analysis".
The “Community Analysis” workshop was held at Benavides Community Learning, San Antonio, TX 78237 onTuesday, September 18, 2012 to train participants on using the most relied-on source for detailed, up-to-date socio-economic statistics covering every community in the San Antonio and South Texas region.
The lab was designed for nonprofit advocacy and social service delivery organizations that use data for budget analysis, grant writing, needs assessment and planning.
In a live computer lab setting, students used the American Factfinder (data search tool); conducted searches using the Census 2010 for population numbers/basic characteristics, and American Community Survey for social/economic characteristics such as school enrollment, household income, poverty status, nativity and language spoken at home. Special emphasis was placed on researching small area data to understand the demographics of your service area. Community Information Now (CI:NOW), gave an overview of their Now:Data site along with examples from the Weave visualization tool on www.cinow.info. The workshop was livestreamed and webcast by NOWCastSA.
