Houston's Data Rescue Seeks to Preserve Federal Open Data

Kinder Institute for Urban Research   (Houston)

February 2017

Given the threat that government datasets may be removed from the open web, Rice University’s Fondren library, with involvement from the Kinder Institute's  and other Rice faculty,  is joining an initiative from the research library community to:

  1. Help archive datasets from federal agencies, particularly those with high value for Rice researchers
  2. Hold a Data Rescue event to catalyze and organize work downloading, describing and archiving data sets. They’re tentatively planning to hold an event at Rice on March 3-4.

Rice’s research community is invited to:

  1. Identify datasets (or data sources such as federal agencies/ sub-agencies) that are important to their research. A formal survey will be sent out soon.
  2. Help spread the word about the Data Rescue event to scientists, researchers, community activists, application developers, software engineers, archivists, and/or other specialists.
