This series of reports and videos from the Des Moines Register is a a comprehensive examination of more than 40 years of economic and family-related data provides surprising new insights about the current plight of Iowa’s children.

The analysis, bolstered by more than 60 interviews with experts from around the state and nation, has led to this revelation: Not in at least two generations have so many Iowa children lived in such extreme poverty, been so ill-equipped to excel in the classroom and been so greatly challenged on matters related to health, family stability and the capacity to land a well-paying job when they become adults.
